Teaching as Inquiry

Our Kahui Ako is Te Kāhui Tai Kura o Te Hiku. It is a roopu that represents 19 Te Hiku Primary, Intermediate and Secondary Schools. 20 ECE and Kohanga Reo, 5 iwi and a host of other organisations and groups.

The 'Achievement Challenges' of the Kahui Ako:

Goal 1: To strengthen students’ engagement with their schooling.

Goal 2: To lift the achievement of all students in writing.

Goal 3: To lift achievement at NCEA Level 2.


To meet these challenges, the goal is to actualize the voice of our children, our community and our culture within our kura. To develop a 'Teaching and Learning' context across our kahui that is built on a foundation/ teacher inquiry of:

  • Quality Teaching and Learning
  • Hauora - Harry Kapa
  • Effective Transitions
Within our school, we have identified the need to focus on Student Agency, and how that might look will vary in each classroom as they focus on an area within that, which they need to work on.

In 2019 for my inquiry I have selected the following CoL achievement challenge:
- Quality Teaching and Learning.

My inquiry question is: 


What tools or strategies can I use with my students to develop reflective thinking and goal setting?


The teaching as inquiry framework I will be using in 2019 has been specifically co-constructed for Manaiakalani schools using our familiar Learn Create Share structure. I will try my best to see how this would fit in with our school inquiry framework which is the Spiral of Inquiry.

The elements in this framework share close similarities with other models New Zealand teachers use.



I will be labelling my posts as I update my inquiry throughout the year to make the content easy to access.
